Great piece, couldn’t agree more. I stopped doing outlines for my essays and stories because it just hampers the “spontaneous truth telling” you talk about

Thanks. The necessity of scaffolding is nuanced per the writer, of course, but I'm glad you've found what works to calm your judge before he's needed!

So great! A friend sent me a plaque that said "it is much simpler than you think," and your piece reminded me of that - it is simple, yet we so rarely do it. I find that this groove of being true to yourself was easy to come by about 5 in the morning when all the rest of the world is asleep - at least that's when i used to write when working at/owning a bakery. Thanks for sharing your inspiring and honest words and thoughts.

Certain spots and times are indeed prime real estate. You find these niche flowcations where you can and just stumble in, like getting into a groove about the groove. In college I carved out a three-hour brunch between classes and afternoon track and sat solo in the back of the athlete cafeteria. Sublime quiet to sculpt chapters after an omelet. It's then or by moonlight, yo!
